Vessel Registration FAQ

  1. Which is the home port of vessels registered in MAR - The International Shipping Register of Madeira?
    The home port of the MAR-flagged vessels is MADEIRA.
  2. Which is the flag of ships registered in MAR?
    All ships registred in MAR will fly the Portuguese national flag.
  3. What documents must be submitted for registration?
    A detailed list of requirements for registration can requested at registration@eu-registry.com.

  4. What process time should be estimated for a registration?
    It is recommended to start with the preparations for a flag change 6-8 weeks in advance. EUROMAR however is able to register a vessel on short notice, if required.
  5. What are the business hours of the EUROMAR?
    The core business hours of EUROMAR are from Monday to Friday 9 am to 6 pm (GMT-1). Outside these hours, EUROMAR is available at any time and any day of the week for you at our emergency number +49-40-36 88 00 48 88.   6. Which fees are expected for flying the Portuguese flag?

  7. Are there different fees for a full or bareboat registration?
    No, there is no difference in costs for a full or bareboat registration.
  8. Are there any restrictions on the acceptance into the Portuguese International Ship Registry?

    Age:
    There are no direct restrictions on the age of the vessels that may be registered, but for ships exceeding 15 years an additional pre-survey might be applicable depending on the ships' PSC and Classification records. 

    Surveys:
    Vessels to be registered may be subject to a pre-survey based on the ships' records, age and detention history.
    All vessels registered in MAR must have their relevant statutory certificates issued by one of the classification societies which have been authorized as a Portuguese Recognized Organization (RO). These entities may also perform surveys and inspections on behalf of MAR, as well as the undertaking of certain tasks. Currently, Portugal recognizes eight classification societies in order to undertake some of its tasks within the framework of MAR:

    ABS – American Bureau of Shipping
    BV – Bureau Veritas
    DNV – Det Norske Veritas
    GL – Germanischer Lloyd
    LR – Lloyd’s Registry
    NK – Class NK
    RINA – Registro Italiano Navale S.p.A.
    RINAVE – Rinave Portuguesa

Other classification societies (IACS members) may be recognized by Portugal in the near future.
